File Format Information
JPEG = Joint Photographic Experts Group, is the standard universal image lossy (compressed) file format most applications understand. We save to the highest quality JPG setting. This format does not have a transparent background available but can come with a hand made clipping path to help isolate the object from the background quickly. Care must be taken when working with original JPG images as each time a JPG is re-saved, more and more compression artifacts are introduced and the image losses quality. If you work on your JPG image, do NOT save over it when you are done, instead save it as a new file in a TIFF or PSD (photoshop) file format so no quality is lost.
PNG = Portable Network Graphics, utilizes lossless compression, meaning no image data is lost when saving or viewing the image. PNG is a combination of TIFF and GIF format. PNG has become the favorite format with Scrapbook digital designers, PNG saves at high photo quality in 300 dpi with a transparent backgraound. Memory on a PNG file is more then JPG but opening with a transparent background is worth it.
AI = Adobe Illustrator, Adobe's drawing application format.
EPS = Encapsulated PostScript, the standard drawing format most programs can read, the most versatile file format that is available for saving vector line art. An EPS file can contain any combination of text, graphics, line art and images. Used in drawing applications such as Adobe illustrator, Freehand, Coral Draw & etc.
PDF = Portable Document Format, for easy document exchange, viewing and reading with Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat application. Used for exchanging documents, proofing design work, and electronic books (eBooks).
